Socio-Economic Factors Influencing the Adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as Vehicle Fuel in Dar es Salaam City, Tanzania

Keywords: CNG; Sustainable urban mobility; Vehicle fuel; and Alternative fuel.

Abstract
By 2050, Africa’s urban population is projected to reach 950 million, raising urgent concern about how cities like Dar es Salaam with a current population of more than 7.4 million can adopt sustainable transport solutions in the face of rapid growth and climate pressure. This study explored the socio-economic factors influencing the adoption of compressed natural gas (CNG) as a vehicle fuel in Dar es Salaam. Using a cross-sectional approach, it combined survey data from vehicle owners with interviews involving energy stakeholders, transport operators, and regulators obtained through simple random and purposive sampling techniques. Statistical analysis, including regression and multiple response techniques, revealed that while awareness of CNG’s environmental benefits is relatively widespread, adoption is hindered by high conversion costs, limited financial support from government and private sectors and concerns about maintenance and compatibility. Public awareness campaigns have shown limited impact. The study recommends targeted collaboration between government and private stakeholders to reduce financial barriers and improve CNG refueling and conversion infrastructure ultimately supporting cleaner, more efficient urban transport systems and contributing to healthier, more sustainable cities.
